WASHINGTON, D. C. --CVS Caremark Inc. is to start selling a generic version of its erectile dysfunction drug Viagra on Wednesday, after regulators said the company had not been properly warned of the risk.
The Food and Drug Administration has warned that its warning was based on insufficient data, potentially allowing the drug's generic competition to be sold as a cheaper generic.
Viagra was introduced by CVS in 2003 and has been available as a generic since then.
In November, CVS said it was reviewing Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs because the warning against generic competition was based on data it had not provided.
The warning came about a month after the company warned that a rival rival drug, called sildenafil, could be sold as a cheaper generic.
The company's new drug application for sildenafil is due to be submitted to the FDA's new regulatory body, the agency's Office of Generic Drugs, after it can submit the application.
Sildenafil is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension and is also used to treat erectile dysfunction.
Viagra and the generic sildenafil, CVS owns the patent for Viagra that was issued by the FDA in 2003.
CVS has not commented on the FDA's warning, but its spokesman said CVS is aware of the risk.
The company's spokesman, Vic vozvi, said the company was reviewing its own data and would update its website if appropriate.
The FDA said it will update its warning on Viagra and sildenafil in due time.
Viagra and sildenafil are both PDE5 inhibitors used to treat erectile dysfunction.
Since 2003, Pfizer Inc. and CVS have launched generic versions of Viagra and similar medications for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
According to a statement, "the company anticipates providing generic products to patients in the United States by the end of this calendar year. In the United Kingdom, the patent for Viagra expires on April 26, 2017 and Pfizer and CVS will no longer be allowed to market generic products to patients through the end of this year. The expiration date of Pfizer's Viagra patent expires May 25, 2017."
The FDA said the company had not received information about a possible patent expiration.
CVS will begin selling sildenafil generic on Monday, with generic competition expected to take place on Nov. 13, when the FDA will issue a final warning.
