If you’re considering using Sildenafil (the generic version of Viagra) to treat your impotence, here’s a look at how this drug works. (You’ll learn more about sildenafil below.)
Viagra (the generic version of Sildenafil) treats erectile dysfunction by enhancing blood flow to the penis. It can be taken on an as-needed basis. It will only help you to get or keep an erection if you’ve had sex recently or for a long time. You’ll also see a difference in how much blood your body uses, as well as how much of it your penis doesn’t use. Sildenafil usually takes about 30 minutes to start working.
This means that it will only help you to keep an erection if you’ve had sex in the past. In other words, it won’t give you an erection right away.
Viagra (the generic version of Viagra) works by increasing blood flow to the penis. When a man is sexually aroused, the enzyme PDE5 ( phosphodiesterase type 5) breaks down the cGMP enzyme, allowing the smooth muscle of the blood vessels to relax. When sexual stimulation occurs during sex, PDE5 breaks down cGMP, allowing the cGMP to accumulate in the penis and cause an erection. Viagra is an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction, but it may take longer to work if you take more than one dose of Viagra per day. Sildenafil is a non-selective inhibitor of PDE5, meaning that it doesn’t affect the smooth muscle in the penis, but it does affect the cGMP. The cGMP levels can be increased by blocking PDE5.
Sildenafil is a tablet that you take daily, usually with or without food. The recommended dose is usually 20mg, but you can take it up to 4 times per day. The side effects of Sildenafil are mostly mild and include headache, flushing, upset stomach, nasal congestion, dizziness, and blurred vision. More serious side effects of Sildenafil are more common in older men. If you have any of these serious side effects, stop taking Sildenafil and contact your doctor immediately.
Sildenafil works for up to 36 hours after you take it. You should take it about one hour before you plan to have sex. Sildenafil will not work faster than 4 hours, and you may not feel the effects for up to 8 hours.
If you are taking Sildenafil with a nitrate drug, it is best to take it with a nitrate-containing therapy. Nitrates come as pills that are taken as a pill, usually as a low-dose (10mg) or as a daily pill. Sildenafil is not usually used in men with angina (chest pain), high blood pressure or heart problems.
Viagra has been shown to cause some mild side effects. Talk to your health care provider if these do not go away within a few days. If you begin to experience more serious reactions, seek medical attention immediately.
Common side effects reported from Viagra use include:
More severe side effects include:
If you experience any of these side effects, seek medical attention immediately. These are symptoms of a severe adverse reaction to this medication that require immediate treatment.
As with all prescription medications, inform your doctor of any medical conditions you currently manage. Tell them about any and all medications, prescription drugs, and supplements you are taking before starting treatment with Viagra. Viagra can interact with bodily substances, causing potentially serious adverse reactions.
Specifically, you should inform your health care provider of any nitrate medication you are taking. Remember to mention any herbal products you use, especially St. John’s wort.
In addition, let your doctor know if you have recently had heart surgery or experience chest pain during sex. If you experience any changes in your heartbeat or chest pain during sex, contact your health care provider immediately.

However, other erectile dysfunction (ED) medicines, such, for instance (by as-is) treated with bio-equivalent drugs, could be used when physiological function is not adequate for controlling sexual desire or ability.
